Fighting For My Kidneys

Writing this is very hard, and I've put it off for a couple of days.  My blood work came back on Tuesday and it wasn't what I wanted to hear.  Although my potassium number was better, my kidney GFR was still in the Stage 3 range (moderate).  My creatinine number was still too high.

On top of that, the NP was still very unhappy with all of my cholesterol numbers and wanted to start me on a statin drug.  This was something that freaked me out.  I don't want to take statins, and hear nothing but horror stories about the side-effects and long-term studies.  I have an appointment to talk to her in a few days to discuss all of this.

Since I believe that my kidney damage has come from all of the medications that I'm taking, I want to be weaned off the ones that are known problems for kidneys.  Cymbalta is probably the worst offender and I've been on it for at least 6 years.  The wean for this drug is known to be horrendous.  I want to do whatever it takes to stop this from progressing.

My low-phosphorus, low-sodium diet was started on Tuesday.  It's very strict, and I'll be staying on it forever if it will keep my kidneys functioning.  Since I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Mast Cell Disorder possibly working against the kidneys also, I want to do all I can to help.  It's debatable if these disorders have any cause, but EDS can make the organs weak.  I also know that I have some type of ongoing auto-immune disorder, which could attack kidneys.

So, here's to uncertainty of official diagnosis, but certainty of determination.  There will be lots of fighting around here.

  2. So sorry to hear all of this. Please be encouraged and stay positive. It sounds like you're willing to do what needs to be done to fight this, and win! Keep informed because only you can decide what meds that you take. I fought taking statins and now have low cholesterol by going vegetarian and watching what I eat. God bless you!
